Found another great teaching idea on The Electronic Pencil blog, in an entry called The Survey Results. The teacher got all her students to take part in an online survey about a school spirit/community service project they could undertake. They were also surveyed about the upcoming USA Presidential Election and qualities of leadership.
This is a technique that could be used for a variety of purposes in an English classroom. For example, where this teacher looked at qualities of leadership, this could be thematically linked to a text studied in class. Or it could be used to survey student attitudes to other universal themes such as love, hope, war and so on.
The answers to the survey were put into a program called Wordle, which creates fantastic word art based on which words are most commonly used. This is also a fantastic application for English teachers, which I was not aware of before. I will certainly be using it in class!
